Can Haryana become the next Punjab? Congress’s Kumari Selja threatens to resign

After Punjab, the Congress may find itself in an equally tumultuous position in neighboring Haryana, where the high command is contemplating a reshuffle in the state unit. The organizational changes proposed by the top leadership of the party in the state are being opposed.

According to Haryana Congress sources, before the high command could make the changes, the incumbent state unit chief Kumari Selja has reportedly threatened to quit the party along with other senior leaders. Top leaders of the party, led by Shailja, are trying to stop an organizational reform at the behest of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Top sources said that Shailaja has informed the high command about her decision to quit the party if the changes are made. “It seems that she is going to contest the election if the changes are made at Hooda’s behest. She is also weighing her options,” said a senior Congress leader.

Sources further said that the party high command is contemplating a major overhaul of the organization in the state, including changing the state unit chief. What has angered the Kumari Selja camp are signs that the party may focus on either Hooda or his son and Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh.

Senior leaders confirmed, while opponents were ready to “discuss” the role of senior Hooda, but were vehemently opposed to a possible move to elevate his son Dipendra. The leaders said Dipendra was too young to be handed over the reins of the state unit.

A leader of the Selja camp remarked, “He is too young to be acceptable and it will be difficult to remain in the Congress under him.” Sources also said that the leaders have also conveyed the sentiments to the top party officials. The party high command, now facing a possible rebellion from senior party leaders in the state, is trying to avoid a Punjab-like situation by engaging in talks. A source said, “A candidate for the post is being discussed which is acceptable to both the parties.

Factionalism within the Haryana unit has been quiet for some time now and these differences have been blamed for the party’s failure to form the government last time.
