Bundesliga: Serge Gnabry Gets Brace As Bayern Munich Squeeze Past Cologne

Serge Gnabry scored twice as Bayern Munich scored their first Bundesliga win this season in a 3-2 win over Cologne on Cologne Sunday, with all five goals scored in a bumper second half. Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Gnabry put Bayern 2-0 ahead after the break, but Cologne bounced back with two goals by Anthony Modest and Mark Uth in the same number of minutes. Gnabry led Julian Nagelsmann to his first Bundesliga victory as head coach, with the winner being slammed to the ceiling 19 minutes before the whistle. Bayern seized control of the Allianz Arena when 18-year-old Jamal Musiala, ghosted through the Cologne defense and squared for Lewandowski on 50 minutes.

The Poland star, who scored a record 41 goals in the Bundesliga last season, has already scored twice in as many league games in 2020/21.

He has now scored in 12 consecutive Bundesliga games last season.

Only Bayern legend Gerd Müller, who died last Sunday aged 75, improved the tally by netting in 16 straight league games.

Ganbry doubled the lead in 59 minutes by stabbing a Thomas Muller cross.

Cologne took credit for the 2–0 trail and scored a minute later.

Modest powered his header from home when Bayern defender Niklas Suelle misjudged a cross.

The French veteran then swung into a cross in Cologne’s next attack, which was stabbed by Uth to home level.

Gnabry restored Bayern’s lead when he picked his spot from the edge of the field as his shot passed over Cologne keeper Timo Horn.

Earlier, former Liverpool striker Taiwo Avonii scored his fourth goal in three games to seal a Bundesliga point for Union Berlin in their 2-2 draw at Hoffenheim.

The 24-year-old, who moved permanently from Merseyside this summer after spending last season on loan at the German capital, equalized with a brilliant strike at the start of the second half.

With Union down 2-1, he saved two minutes in the second half by volleying home on the second attempt after passing his opening shot.

It was a golden week for the Nigerian, who scored twice and scored a third goal after beating Finnish club Kuopian Palosura 4-0 in a first-leg qualifier for the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

Avonii also scored the first goal in a 1-1 league draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen last Saturday.

Union took the lead after 10 minutes at Hoffenheim when defender Nico Giselmann tapped home the rebound after his header was blocked.

The hosts bounced back and four minutes later, defender Kevin Akpoguma equalized.

Hoffenheim took the lead in the half-hour when a brilliant Lady Kramarik long ball came from Danish forward Jakob Brun Larsson, who scored his second goal in as many games before equalizing Avonii.

The union ended with 10 men as defender Marvin Frederick was dismissed in extra time for a second booking. He will now miss next Sunday’s home match against Borussia Moenchengladbach.
