Bridge course compulsory for primary school teachers

The government has made bridge courses mandatory for the training of primary school teachers.

As per the new rules, candidates who have secured three-year Integrated B.Ed-MEd from any National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) recognized institutions will be considered for appointment as a teacher for classes 1 to 5, provided the individual As a. Six Months Bridge Course in Elementary Education within two years of appointment as Primary Teacher.

An earlier gazette notification of the National Council for Teacher Education was amended on August 23, 2010, specifying the qualifications for school teachers.

Other amendments include, “Graduation with at least 50% marks and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.)” or “Post Graduation with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade and three-year integrated B.Ed.-M.Ed. .”, as the minimum qualification.

As per earlier clause, 50% marks and two year Diploma in Elementary Education or Senior Secondary with at least 45% marks and Two year Diploma in Elementary Education or Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and Four year Diploma in Elementary Education or Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks BEd Degree OR Senior Secondary with % Marks and Two Year Diploma in Education (Special Education) was required.

To be appointed as teachers for classes 6 to 8, candidates must have a bachelor’s level degree with at least 50% marks and one year B.Ed special education, or post-graduation with minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade and three The year must be integrated. B.Ed.-M.Ed.

Earlier, the validity was for seven years, but now it will be valid for life with retrospective effect from 2011. TET is conducted at both the central and state level. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), on the basis of which, candidates are hired for teaching positions in primary schools.
