breaking | Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns as Punjab PCC chief after Congress defeat

new Delhi: Navjot Singh Sidhu, the party’s state in-charge of Punjab, has tendered his resignation after Congress President Sonia Gandhi asked the PCC chiefs of all five states to resign from their posts following the party’s humiliating defeat in the elections.

The Congress leader shared his resignation on his Twitter handle. “As per the wish of the Congress President, I have sent my resignation…”

This comes after the defeat of the Congress in all the five states where assembly elections were held.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday asked the chiefs of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur units to resign, amid the ongoing uproar in the party after the defeat in the assembly elections in these states.

Party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said on Twitter, “Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has asked the PCC Presidents of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur to tender their resignations to facilitate the reconstitution of the PCC.”

Sidhu, Uttarakhand state unit chief Ganesh Godiyal and his Manipur counterpart N Loken Singh were appointed PCC president ahead of the assembly elections.

Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu also resigned from his post on Tuesday, taking moral responsibility for the party’s humiliating defeat in the state assembly elections.

Sonia Gandhi on Sunday removed five Congress PCC chiefs after holding a meeting where the CWC deliberated on the reasons for the party’s defeat in the latest round of state assembly elections. The Congress failed to grab the four BJP-ruled states and lost Punjab to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
