Ranaghat (West Bengal):

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday rescued two white peacocks in West Bengal’s Nadia district while the birds were being brought to India from Bangladesh, a paramilitary force official said.

He said that while patrolling near the Burnpur-Matiyari border post in the early hours of Friday, BSF personnel spotted two men hiding in the forest near the International Border.

On being challenged, the alleged Bangladeshi smugglers fled the spot leaving behind two bags. The BSF personnel opened the bags and found two albino peacocks in them, the official said.

BSF personnel fed the peacocks and handed them over to the forest department.

Pradeep Bagchi, deputy ranger (Ranaghat) of Nadia Murshidabad range of forest department, said, “We have found two peacocks. They can either be sent to Alipore Zoo in Kolkata or released to Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary in Nadia.”
