BJP wins Panchayat by-elections in Arunachal Pradesh

The ruling BJP in Arunachal Pradesh won the Panchayat by-elections by winning 108 Gram Panchayat (GP) seats. Election Commission (SEC) officials said this here on Saturday. The National People’s Party (NPP) won five GP seats, the opposition Congress and the Janata Dal (United) won three seats each and independents 11 seats, for which counting took place on Saturday, state election commissioner Hege Kozyn said. .

Independent candidate Bengia Tayang defeated his rival NPP candidate Chelo Tagar by a margin of 98 votes in Kurung Kume district’s lone Zilla Parishad Member (ZPM) seat. On June 14, the SEC had issued a notification to hold panchayat by-elections for 130 GP seats and one ZPM seat. However, in 116 GP seats, candidates were declared elected unopposed as there was only one candidate. BJP won 101 GP seats, NPP and Congress won two seats each, JD(U) one and independents 10.

By-elections were held on July 12 for the ZPM seat and 14 for the GP seat. Of the total 4,057 eligible voters, 84.55 per cent exercised their franchise to elect 14 GP members and one ZPM, Kojin reported.

Arunachal Pradesh has a total of 8,216 GP seats and 242 ZPM seats. Among the ZPM seats, the ruling BJP has 188, JD(U) 10, Congress (9), NPP (7), PPA (3) and independents (24).

Of the total GPM seats in the state, BJP holds 6,378 seats, Congress (378), NPP (243), JDU (159), PPA (27) and independents (1046). Kojin said elections to 40 GPM seats and one ZPM seat in Vijayanagar sub-division of Changlang district have been kept pending due to law and order and other administrative issues.
