BJP will have only one engine before 2024 polls: Fadnavis on pre-poll alliance with MNS

The suspense over any possibility of an alliance between the BJP and the Raj Thackeray-led MNS deepened on Saturday when senior leader Devendra Fadnavis and Maharashtra unit president Chandrakant Patil did not give a direct reply. While Patil is in New Delhi to meet the Union Home Minister Amit Shah And other senior leaders, Leader of the Opposition Fadnavis said in secret that the saffron party would have only one engine to contest the 2024 general elections. The railway engine is the election symbol of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Speaking to reporters in Pune, Fadnavis said, Patil has already clarified his position and the party’s stand with regard to a possible pre-poll alliance with the MNS. However, the BJP is going to have only one engine before the 2024 (General) elections.

Former chief minister Fadnavis did not specify whether he meant joining hands with the MNS or going alone in the general elections. On speculations that Patil will be replaced as the state BJP president, Fadnavis said, “The party is doing good work under Patil’s leadership in the state and all leaders are with him.” At present, there is no talk of changing the leadership in the state.

After meeting the MNS chief at his residence in Mumbai on Friday, Patil said there is no possibility of an alliance at the moment. However, the meeting sparked speculations of a possible tie-up as the Mumbai civic body elections are due next year. Patil said, “Raj told me that he does not hold any grudge against non-Marathi people living in Mumbai. We still have some political differences and at this point of time there is no proposal to join hands before the elections. “

Patil told reporters in Delhi on Saturday, “I have come here to inform senior party leaders about the meeting with Raj Thackeray. Any decision will be taken by these leaders. Senior leaders will also have to consider the national interest.” Prior to Patil, Fadnavis and former Mumbai unit president Ashish Shelar had separate meetings with senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Asked about these meetings, Patil said, “It is a common practice in the party that leaders visit Delhi separately. There isn’t much to read in it. Patil is accompanied by other leaders from Maharashtra including Ram Shinde, Jaykumar Rawal, Shrikant Bhartiya and Sanjay Kute. The BJP has said that it is not allergic to any party as far as the pre-poll alliance is concerned, but with the condition that their political stand should match. Some BJP leaders are of the view that the MNS is not an untouchable, provided it softens its anti-migrant stand. The Shiv Sena has been in power in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for more than three decades. In the 2017 Mumbai civic elections, the BJP contested separately and won 82 seats out of a total of 227 seats. The MNS had won seven seats, but six of its councilors later joined the Shiv Sena. Shiv Sena won 97 seats and Congress 31 seats.

Speaking to the media in Pune recently, Raj Thackeray, who took an anti-North Indian stand after leaving Shiv Sena 15 years ago, had said that he was not going to change his political stance for electoral gains.
