BJP Protests In Bengal Assembly, Demands Mamata Banerjee’s Statement On Adenovirus Deaths

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday demanded a statement from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the state assembly on the recent deaths due to infection. The saffron party accused the Bengal government of not doing enough to check the spread of adenovirus. The BJP parliamentary party moved an adjournment motion seeking a discussion on the adenovirus scare at the end of the first part of the assembly session, but Speaker Biman Banerjee refused to allow it, leading to protests by party members in the House . After this, the house was adjourned by the speaker for a holiday.

The CM had told the Assembly on Monday that six children had died in the state due to adenovirus, and urged people to start using face masks again to combat the menace.
Reacting to the BJP’s protest in the Assembly, Chandrima Bhattacharya, the state’s junior health minister, said the opposition party has made a ‘habit’ of skipping the CM’s speech and then criticizing it on the same issue.

“Whenever the Chief Minister makes a speech in the House, the opposition makes an issue of his absence, and then seeks a statement. Why is the opposition party of our state behaving so irresponsibly?” He added.

Adding to the panic over the adenovirus spread in West Bengal, three more children admitted with related symptoms have been reported dead in two Kolkata hospitals, news agency IANS reported on Wednesday.

Of the three fresh deaths, two were reported from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and one from BC Roy Children’s Hospital. Though the state health department has stopped issuing any bulletin on deaths due to the virus, 48 ​​deaths are being claimed during the last 11 days.

There is currently no approved drug or specific line of treatment for adenovirus, which can spread through skin contact, through the air through coughs and sneezes, and through the feces of an infected person.
