The BJP on Friday named fashion designer-turned-MLA Agnimitra Paul as the party’s candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha constituency to contest against Trinamool Congress’s Shatrughan Sinha. BJP’s women’s wing leader Kiya Ghosh, a well-known face in the TV panel discussion, has been made the party’s candidate for the by-election to the Ballygunge assembly seat in Kolkata. He was pitted against former Union minister and TMC candidate Babul Supriyo.
Party’s West Bengal spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya told PTI that the central leadership of the BJP in Delhi announced the names. Bypolls to both the seats will be held on April 12 and the counting of votes will take place on April 16.
Paul was elected to the state assembly last year on a BJP ticket from Asansol South seat in West Bardhaman district. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee nominated actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha to contest from the industrial city of Asansol, which has a good Hindi-speaking population.
In the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, the Left Front has fielded senior CPI(M) leader Partha Mukherjee as its candidate for the bypoll. It has named Saira Shah Halim of CPI(M) as its candidate for the bypoll to the Ballygunge assembly seat. He is a well-known face in prime time debate shows on national news channels.
The bypoll for Asansol was necessitated as Supriyo had resigned as a BJP MP after joining the TMC in September last year. The Ballygunge assembly seat is going for by-elections as sitting MLA and Minister of State Subrata Mukherjee passed away in November 2021.
Paul could not be contacted for his comment as he did not respond to calls and text messages. Kiia Ghosh alleged that Supriyo acted in the most immoral manner by changing allegiance.
“Apart from fighting against TMC’s misrule and attack on democracy, my job will be to expose Supriyo. He will be defeated in the by-election.”
