A scuffle broke out on Thursday between Kolkata Police and BJP leaders close to the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata BanerjeeAt his residence in South Kolkata, when the BJP tried to take out a procession for the last rites of their leader in the area, Manas Saha.
BJP’s Dhurjyoti Saha, popularly known as Manas, died on Wednesday at a private nursing home in Thakurpukur area. He was admitted to the hospital with multiple head injuries on May 2, the day of the election results, following an alleged attack by Trinamool Congress supporters. His condition suddenly deteriorated and he died on Wednesday.
Saha contested the assembly election from Magarhat West constituency of South 24 Parganas district, and lost to Ghiyasuddin Molla of TMC by 97,006 votes.
His family members have alleged that Saha was attacked by Molla’s supporters outside a counting center on the day of the election results.
The BJP on Thursday decided to take out a funeral procession of Saha in the area of the Chief Minister’s residence, but was stopped by the police. The funeral procession was led by West Bengal BJP president Sukant Majumdar and BJP MP Arjun Singh, besides other party leaders including Priyanka Tibrewal, who is contesting against Banerjee in the Bhawanipur bypoll.
All the BJP leaders and supporters involved in the funeral procession were stopped by the Kolkata Police at Kalighat. The BJP alleges that the people who were taking Saha’s body towards the CM residence were assaulted by the policemen.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, South Division, Akash Magharia is having a tough time handling the situation. Heavy police force was present at the spot to bring the situation under control.
Arjun Singh said, “The family members of Manas Saha wanted to meet the Chief Minister for justice. However, he was surrounded by Kolkata Police. Is this democracy? West Bengal is ruled by Taliban. The police stopped us from moving forward and misbehaved with us. They also beat up our party leaders. The ruling TMC has politicized the bureaucracy. The police here are working as servants of the ruling party.
On August 19, the Calcutta High Court handed over the cases of murder and crime against women related to the post-poll violence in West Bengal to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), while the remaining cases to a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Gave. Both the CBI investigation and the SIT investigation are under the supervision of the court.
I hope CBI will take strict action against those involved in the murder of Manas (Saha). I would like to request the residents of Bhawanipur to give a befitting reply to Mamata Banerjee for her dictatorship in Bengal,” said Singh, adding that the body was taken to Mogarhat for cremation.
On Twitter, BJP Bengal tweeted from its official handle: “BJP candidate from Mograhat West Assembly Manas Saha is another victim of post-poll violence! He was brutally thrashed by TMC thugs at Diamond Harbor on the day of the result and he died today after a long treatment. Mamata Banerjee’s hands are stained with the blood of BJP workers.
Retweeting BJP Bengal’s tweet, BJP’s national in-charge of IT department Amit Malviya said: “BJP has buried the body of Manas Saha, its Mogarhat West AC candidate, who died after a protracted fight in the post-poll violence. transferred as a result. Earlier in the day, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri paid his last tribute to Saha and offered condolences to his family members.
Majumdar said, “His (Manas Saha) sacrifice will not go in vain. We will continue to raise our voice against the misrule of the TMC government in Bengal.
Responding to the allegations, TMC leader Tapas Roy said, “BJP leaders are directionless after the humiliating defeat in the assembly elections. They don’t even know what to do now. Any death is unfortunate for me and my condolences are with his family members.”
