Born as Gopishant, she was raised by a mother who worked as a domestic help to feed herself. She attributed her success to her mother, saying that many of the characters she has done in films are based on her own mother.
Taking the screen name of Manorama, she entered the world of cinema as a comedian in 1958 with the film Malayitta Mangai. Manorama has made a name for herself in Tamil cinema by starring in several hit films such as Kalathur Kannamma, Konjum Kumari, Thielana Mohanambal, Ethir Neechal, Pattikkada Pattanama and Kasethan Kadavulada.
Actors Nagesh and Manorama have teamed up for 19 films including Chandrodayam, Annamita Kai, Saraswati Sabatham and Galata Kalyanam. The two became such a comic couple who used to make the audience laugh. He did playback singing for 300 Tamil films, most of which featured him. He sang his first song in the film Magalle Un Samthu, which was composed by GK Venkatesh and was given this opportunity by PA Kumar, the producer of the film.
