Some coaches derailed. However, a senior railway official said that the train was short of passengers due to the pandemic situation. He said rescue operations have been launched and floodlights and cranes have been sent to the spot.

About 50 ambulances were sent to the spot to rescue the injured passengers. Doctors from local hospitals have also been asked to reach the spot. Even the North Bengal Medical College was asked to keep arrangements ready for the accident passengers.

Jalpaiguri DM Moumita Godara Basu said five bodies were seen and more than ten serious passengers were sent to hospital. The condition of about 15 passengers is said to be critical and they have been admitted to Mainaguri Hospital, sources said.
The rescue operation was hampered due to darkness, for which the Railways brought cranes and lights to the rescue. Officials are trying to trace the injured passengers trapped in the broken coaches.

During a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed him about the train accident. An announcement has been made to give compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.
To take stock of the situation, PM Modi spoke to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. “Spoke to Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnav and took stock of the situation in the wake of train accident in West Bengal. My condolences to the bereaved families. Wishing speedy recovery to the injured,” he tweeted.

Senior railway officials and police officials have reached the spot to coordinate the rescue work. Local people are also trying to cooperate in the rescue operation.
