Bengal violence was sparked by politicians whose minds are like dustbins: Mamata

New Delhi: Days after violence erupted in West Bengal during protests over controversial remarks made by now-sacked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma against Prophet Muhammad, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (June 16, 2022) said that By whom was it sparked? Politicians whose minds are like “dustbins”. Speaking in Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief also said that Violence is not being “incited by persons of any religion”,

“Violence is being created not by people of any religion, but by some politicians, whose mind is like a dustbin… I will never speak against any religion,” she said.

Mamata’s remarks come amid the Calcutta High Court directing the West Bengal government to take all possible steps to ensure that there is no violence during any protest over Nupur Sharma’s statements. The court also asked on Thursday Government will call central forces if needed,

Demanding action against Sharma, protesters vandalized public and private properties and blocked roads and railway tracks for several hours on June 9 and 10 in Howrah district and some other places in the state.

The court had also on June 13 hoped that the state authorities would take all possible steps to ensure that no untoward incident took place and peace prevailed. It had said that steps would be taken to call in the central forces if the state police fails to control the situation.
