It has been said in an order that the administration has appointed Additional CP Praveen Tripathi of Kolkata Police as the new Police Commissioner of Howrah city.

The West Bengal government on Saturday reshuffled police in Howrah district, sparking violent protests over controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by suspended BJP spokespersons. An order said that the state administration has appointed additional CP Praveen Tripathi of Kolkata Police as the new police commissioner of Howrah city.

Swati Bhangalia, DCP (South West) of Kolkata Police has been made the new SP of Howrah (Rural). Howrah City Police Commissioner C Sudhakar was made Joint CP of Kolkata Police, while Howrah (Rural) SP Soumya Roy was made DCP (South-West) of Kolkata Police.

The decision was taken during an emergency meeting held at the state secretariat regarding the prevailing situation in Howrah district. “These appointments have been started in the interest of public service,” the order said.

Protests broke out in several parts of Howrah district on Friday over controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal. Protesters pelted stones, torched police vehicles and damaged public property during violent protests and clashes with law enforcers in the district.

In several areas like Uluberia, Domjur and Panchla, internet services have been suspended across the district till June 13 to prevent the spread of rumors and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been imposed till June 15. Fresh violence was reported in Panchala Bazar area. On Saturday, protesters clashed with the police in the district and several houses were torched. The protesters pelted stones at policemen, injuring some of them and also ransacked the BJP party office.
