Bellary carved out of mine, Vijayanagar becomes 31st district of Karnataka

Karnataka’s 31st district Vijayanagara, named after the late King Krishna Devaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire, officially came into existence on Saturday. Vijayanagara, carved out of the mine-rich Ballari district, will have Hospet, Harapanahalli, Kudaligi, Huvina Hadagali, Hagribommanahalli and Kotturu taluks. Hospet will be its administrative capital.

The district is already a major tourist destination as all the important sites of the Vijayanagara dynasty are located here. A colorful event with a grand fire works display marked the formation of the new district.

Issuing a government order announcing the formation of the new district, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the Vijayanagara Empire was not formed in a day, but was formed in Hakka (also known as Harihara Raya) and Bukka Raya, on the Tungabhadra River. The Chief Minister appreciated Tourism Minister Anand Singh for his struggle to create a new district. He also hoped that the formation of the district would mark a new era of art, music, literature and culture for which the erstwhile Vijayanagara was famous.

The Chief Minister expressed hope that now the archaeological sites would be well preserved. He also assured financial assistance to the new district. Bommai laid the foundation stone of 56 different public works in the newly formed district on the occasion.

Yediyurappa and ministers Anand Singh, Govind Karjol, Muniratna and B Sriramulu were present.
