The incident happened during a Sixers inning when Josh Phillippe was facing Matt Kukenman. Facing the first ball of the seventh over, Philippe attempted a sweep but failed to make a connection and the ball was caught by the wicket-keeper.

Brisbane Heat defeated Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League Eliminator (BBL), which was also a low-scoring thriller. In the end, the Sixers were edged out by the Heat as they set up a finals date with the Perth Scorchers. With only 117 needed to win, the Sixers almost pulled off a surprise victory as they reduced the Heat to 56/5 at the midway stage.

However, Michael Neser anchored the Heat’s run chase as the team eventually recovered from the early jitters and completed the proceedings in 18.2 overs. Neser returned unbeaten on 48 off 32 balls, which included seven fours.

But what caught attention was the incident where the third umpire lost his mind.

The incident happened during a Sixers inning when Josh Phillippe was facing Matt Kukenman. Facing the first ball of the seventh over, Philippe attempted a sweep but failed to make a connection and the ball was caught by the wicket-keeper.

Soon after the action, Heat wicket-keeper Jimmy Pierson made a loud appeal for a caught-back, but the on-field umpire declared it not out.

However, The Heat opted for a review and after examining replays it became clear that the ball had clipped Phillips’ gloves to the wicket-keeper.

Despite the spike on the snickometer as the ball passed close to the gloves, the third umpire asked the on-field official to stand by his decision.

However, unhappy with the call, Pearson kept holding the ball and forced the umpire to consult the third umpire again. Realizing his mistake, the third umpire then upheld his decision as Philippe was caught behind for 16 off the same number of balls.

On-air commentators were equally shocked by the turn of events, with one commenting: “Baffled by this”.

The Heat will now take on the Scorchers in the BBL final.
