JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said she caught two ABVP members who pelted stones at her.

Two JNU students have alleged that they were assaulted and harassed by some members of the students’ union, a charge dismissed by JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh, who claimed she watched a controversial BBC documentary on the Prime Minister. Throw stones at the watching gathering. Narendra Modi Tuesday night.

Left-backed AISA, whose members attended the screening of the documentary, rejected the allegation, claiming they caught two members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) but were not harassed.

AISA JNU president Qasim said, “When they threw stones at us, we caught them but did not harass them in any way.” Police said they have received cross-complaints from both the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNSU) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

There was no immediate official response from the JNU administration on the students’ allegations and counter-claims. It had said in an advisory on Monday that the JNSU had not taken its permission for the event and it should be cancelled, warning of strict disciplinary action.

On Tuesday night, several students who gathered at the JNU Students’ Union office for the screening of a BBC documentary staged a protest after stones were pelted at them, claiming that the university administration cut off electricity and internet to stop the programme.

He claimed that he was attacked when he was watching the documentary on his mobile phone as the screening could not take place. Some alleged that the attackers were members of the ABVP, a charge denied by the student body affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said she caught two ABVP members who pelted stones at her.

“We were peacefully watching documentaries on our cell phones as the university snapped electricity and internet. ABVP goons pelted stones at us. We caught two of them,” she said.

Among the two men caught was Gaurav, a second-year postgraduate student of the university, who denied that he had thrown any stone. He claimed that he was attacked by JNUSU members.

“I was outside the campus with my friends for tea when I saw a large number of people gathered. Before I could react, I saw the commotion. “Many people surrounded me and grabbed me by the neck. I pleaded him that I am a heart patient and have anxiety problem. But he started dragging and made several allegations against me,” claimed Gaurav. He is associated with ABVP but claimed that he was unaware of any development on the campus.

Another student claimed, “I was out with my friends when they grabbed and harassed me.” Raising slogans of Inquilab Zindabad and against the JNU administration, late on Tuesday night, the protesting students marched to the Vasant Kunj police station to lodge a complaint against the stone-pelters.

A senior police officer said, “We have received cross-complaints from JNSU and ABVP. We are looking into the complaints and further action will be taken accordingly.” On the power cut on the campus, an official of the JNU administration, requesting anonymity, told PTI, “There is a major (power) line fault in the university. We are probing it. Engineering department is saying that it will be resolved as soon as possible.
