In India’s defence, they are not playing their first-choice eleven but are players who can form the center of the squad that the selectors can pick for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 to be played in Australia. One of those contenders is veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar who was in scintillating form on Sunday night, taking four wickets for just 13 runs in his quota of four overs. While their stocks have declined in recent years with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar establishing themselves as the first choices, Bhuvneshwar has started making the right noise.
“Is Bhuvneshwar Kunar still your premier T20 bowler? I think the conditions apply (to this),” former India opener Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel. “It was a phenomenal performance (against South Africa). He took three wickets with the new ball. He is brilliant when the conditions are favorable (for his style of bowling), he is unbeatable. The race is tough (though). There are Bumrah, Shami, Famous Krishna, Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, T Natarajan, Mohsin Khan, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.
Chopra believes that if Bhuvneshwar is to be consistent, he can be a part of India’s pace premier attack along with Jasprit Bumrah.
“If we talk about the last he (Bhubaneswar) was a little behind the curve T20 World Cup but if he continues to perform like that, that’s where he is. B&B (Bumrah and Bhubaneshwar) connection will be back. It was a great performance,” he said.
