Average 77 rape cases reported per day in 2020, decline in crime against women from 2019: NCRB

New Delhi: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), which functions under the Union Home Ministry, said in its latest data released on Wednesday that on an average 77 rape cases were reported every day across the country in 2020, taking a total of 28,046 during the year. Such incidents happened. .

NCRB data showed that 3,71,503 cases of crime against women were registered across India last year, up from 4,05,326 in 2019 and 3,78,236 in 2018.

The data said that out of the total cases of crimes against women in 2020, 28,153 victims were raped at 28,046.

Of the total victims, 25,498 were adults, while 2,655 were under the age of 18, according to NCRB data for the year, which saw the outbreak of Covid-19 and the pandemic-induced lockdown, reported PTI.

According to the NCRB data for the respective years, the number of rape cases in 2019 was 32,033, 33,356 in 2018, 32,559 in 2017 and 38,947 in 2016.

The highest number of rape cases were reported in Rajasthan (5,310), followed by Uttar Pradesh (2,769), Madhya Pradesh (2,339), Maharashtra (2,061) and Assam (1,657) last year.

Data released by the NCRB, which is responsible for collecting and analyzing crime data as defined by the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and special and local laws in the country, showed that Delhi registered 997 such cases during the year.

The data also showed that out of the total crimes against women in 2020, a maximum of 1,11,549 were in the category of “cruelty by husband or relatives”, while there were 62,300 cases of kidnapping and abduction.

NCRB data shows that apart from rape there were 85,392 cases of “assault on modesty” and 3,741 cases of “attempt to rape”, NCRB data shows, 105 cases of acid attacks across India during 2020 were recorded.

Apart from this, the data also showed that 6,966 cases of dowry death were registered in the country in 2020 with 7,045 victims.
