Avalanche alert issued in Kashmir, forecast of heavy snowfall

Moderate to heavy snowfall occurred at most places in Kashmir on Friday, officials said, as authorities issued an alert for avalanche-prone areas. An official of the Meteorological Department said that most areas of south and central Kashmir have received moderate snowfall.
“There is going to be heavy snowfall tonight and tomorrow. The weather is likely to improve from Sunday,” the official said.
Several flights to the Srinagar airport had to be canceled due to the snowfall that started later in the afternoon, he said.
He said that out of the 37 scheduled flights, 23 had taken off till the snowfall started. Authorities have issued an avalanche warning for the snowy mountainous areas of Kashmir. The official said people living in the hill districts of the valley and the Chenab region have been advised not to venture out unnecessarily.
