Aurangabad Is Now ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’, Osmanabad Will Be ‘Dharashiv’

Mumbai: The Center on Friday issued a notification to change the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad cities in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Accordingly, Aurangabad will now be known as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and Osmanabad will be called ‘Dharashiv’, as per a central notification.

This comes after the Maharashtra government wrote to the Center on October 20, 2022, seeking change of names, which was approved by the state cabinet.

While Osmanabad goes back to its ancient name of ‘Dharashiv’ after a group of caves near the city, Aurangabad was the son and successor of the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj – Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj – who succeeded his father for 8 years (1681).
