The mercury continued to drop in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday and Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far, resulting in freezing of water supply lines as well as the banks of several water bodies, officials said.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius on Friday night, which was minus 3.8 degrees Celsius from the previous night.

He said it was the coldest night of the season so far in the city and the minimum temperature for this season was 4.5 degrees below normal.

Gulmarg resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.5 degrees Celsius. The resort was the coldest recorded place in the valley.

Officials said Pahalgam, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.3 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the city of Drass in Ladakh recorded minus 20.3 at night and minus 15.3 in Leh.

The minimum temperature was 2.8 degrees in Katra, minus 1.1 in Batote, minus 1.2 in Banihal and minus 2.9 in Bhaderwah.

North Kashmir’s Kupwara recorded a low of minus 6.1 degrees Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town of the valley, recorded a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag too recorded a low of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius.

Due to the cold wave conditions, water supply lines in many areas of the Valley as well as banks of several water bodies were frozen, he said.

The Meteorological Department has forecast cold nights for the next few days as the minimum temperature is likely to drop further.

There is also a possibility of a White Christmas as widespread moderate to heavy snowfall is likely till December 23-25.
