Assam-Meghalaya border dispute has been resolved at six places: Himanta

There is a dispute at 12 places regarding the inter-state boundary between Assam and Meghalaya. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has said that the dispute over six seats between the two states has been resolved. An MoU will be signed between the two states in this regard. The Assam and Meghalaya governments will sign a MoU later this month. Himanta Biswa Sharma held a meeting with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in Guwahati on Wednesday.

“After today’s discussion, we have reached a mutual agreement at the government level to resolve the dispute in principle,” Hemant told reporters in the day. Both the states have agreed to discuss the issue with the opposition parties, student unions and other stakeholders in the respective states on January 18.

Earlier last year, the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya had agreed to discuss a step-by-step solution to the disputed areas. In such a situation, Sangma and Himanta talked about seeing 6 places in the first phase. The places which were discussed in the meeting were: Tarabari, Gijang, Hahim, Boklapara, Khanapara-Pilankata and Ratchera. The areas include Kamrup, Kamrup (metropolitan) and Cachar districts of Assam and West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and East Jaintia Hill districts of Meghalaya. The two states met in Shillong earlier this month. There the respective states have submitted their reports to each other.
