Assam Institutes Keep Freshers in Separate Hostels to Prevent Ragging

In the wake of the Dibrugarh University ragging case, various higher education institutions in Assam have taken strict precautionary measures to prevent harassment of freshers, including keeping freshers in separate hostels. Assam University authorities in Silchar have asked senior students to post bonds not to indulge in ragging. The authorities have issued a notice for the students to fill a specified form online to give sureties for not indulging in any kind of ragging activity. Every student of the university has to fill the form and give a bond against ragging.

A university official said that if evidence of involvement in any ragging case is found, strict action will be taken against that student. The authorities of Silchar Medical College and NIT Silchar have made separate hostel arrangements for the newly admitted students.

Principal of Silchar Medical College, Dr. Babul Kumar Bezbarua said that as a precaution, arrangements have been made to keep new students of MBBS course in separate hostels in the college. “In the newly constructed PG hostel, MBBS freshers are accommodated along with first year students of PG level. After staying in this hostel for the entire first year, they will be shifted to another hostel in the next year where the senior students of MBBS course are staying.

Incidentally, last year eight senior students of the Silchar Medical College were expelled for a fixed period due to ragging in the boys’ hostel. An official of the medical college said that the experience of the past has shown that when fresh students are kept in the same hostel with seniors, there is a problem.

Novices often become victims of ragging by seniors. So this time he has been kept in a separate hostel for one year. Tight security arrangements have been made around this hostel. The anti-ragging squad members were keeping a strict vigil.

Meanwhile, Pranjit Barman, dean of student welfare at NIT Silchar, said that the new students will stay in a separate hostel for a year. Later they will be shifted to another hostel along with senior students.

Barman further said that apart from keeping new students in separate hostels, the authorities are keeping a close watch to prevent ragging in the campus.
