New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam has worsened and the death toll has risen to 82, affecting over 41 lakh people in 34 districts of the state. Home Minister Amit Shah called up Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to discuss the way forward amid the dire situation in the flood-hit state. He also announced that an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) would visit the flood-affected areas of Assam and Meghalaya to assess the damage as they did from May 26 to May 29, 2022.

5,424 villages under 125 revenue divisions in 32 districts – Bajli, Baksa, Barpeta, Vishwanath, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Chirang, Darang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro) According to the ANI report, Karbi Anglong West, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tamulpur, Tinsukia, Udalguri are in the grip of floods.

In lower Assam’s Barpeta district alone, over 12.30 lakh people have been affected, followed by Darrang 4.69 lakh, Nagaon 4.40 lakh, Bajli 3.38 lakh, Dhubri 2.91 lakh, Kamrup 2.82 lakh, Goalpara 2.80 lakh and Cachar. 2.07 lakh people have been affected. 1.84 lakh in Nalbari, 1.51 lakh in South Salmara, 1.46 lakh in Bongaigaon and 1.34 lakh in Karimganj district.
The ASDMA also informed that seven people have gone missing amid the natural calamity while 2,31,819 people have taken shelter in 810 relief camps in the state. A total of 1,13,485.37 hectares of land has been affected due to the disaster, while the ASDMA in its report further said that at least 11,292 people have been evacuated from the affected areas.
The administration of the flood-affected districts has set up 810 relief camps and 615 relief distribution centers and around 2.32 lakh people are currently living in relief camps. Meanwhile, the Karimganj district administration has closed all government and private educational institutions in the district till June 23.
