Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s BIG MOVE Dibrugarh Ragging incident

On the Dibrugarh University ragging incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that the state government will soon launch a drive against illegal boarders in the hostels of various educational institutions in the state. “Ex-students of any educational institution will not be allowed to stay in hostels. We will strictly enforce this rule across the state,” he added.

Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that if police, administration and officials of educational institutions work together, incidents of ragging will not happen. “To detect illegal boarders, the state government will launch a special drive in educational institutions,” the chief minister said.

Anand Sharma, an M.Com student of Dibrugarh University, had faced severe ragging by some senior students in the university hostel last week. She then jumped off the two-storey hostel building to “save herself from extreme mental and physical harassment”. The seriously injured Sharma is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Doctors told that he is out of danger. Dibrugarh University has already expelled 18 students involved in the ragging incident.

By registering an FIR, the police arrested four accused. On Thursday, another student involved in this incident has also been detained by the police. However, the main accused, an alumnus of the university, is still absconding.
