Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sharma visits flood-hit Silchar for the third time in less than 10 days

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday made another official visit to the flood-hit Silchar town of Cachar district. This was his third visit to the district headquarters city in less than 10 days. He visited the relief and medical camps set up in Gurcharan College campus and interacted with the people there.

In the relief camp, he assured the people of all possible help from the government and directed the officials concerned to ensure proper arrangements like cleanliness, drinking water and nutritious food in the camps.

Later, he distributed ex-gratia money to the kin of 10 people who lost their lives in recent flood-related incidents. Chief Minister Sarma said that the process of providing financial relief to the next of kin of the remaining deceased has started and they will also be given compensation soon.

“More than 1 crore population of Assam is affected by the floods. It is one third of Assam. We are trying to stand by them. Barak Valley has been badly affected. We will help those whose homes have been damaged. We are there with the people,” he said.

The Chief Minister also presided over a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office and directed officials of the district administration and other departments to leave no stone unturned to ensure the earliest return of normalcy in the district. He directed the senior officers to take special care of the needs of pregnant women, lactating mothers and children in relief camps and elsewhere in the state.

The Chief Minister concluded his official visit by visiting the breached areas of the Bethukandi Dam on the Barak River. He directed the engineers and officials to ensure that proper quality material is used in the reconstruction of the damaged areas.

Sources said that at a time when opposition parties have raised questions over the presence of rebel Shiv Sena MLAs in flood-hit Assam, Sarma and his cabinet minister have decided to visit the flood-hit areas everyday.
