Guwahati: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma Fulfilled its election promise of coming up with a grand loan waiver scheme for microfinance women in debt,
Sarma on Sunday launched the Assam Micro Finance Incentive and Relief Scheme, 2021 at Tezpur in North Assam, under which 24 lakh indebted Financial relief will be given to women in the state.
In Sonitpur district alone, where he formally distributed checks to five women beneficiaries, a total of 59,468 women would receive an assistance of Rs 16,000 to Rs 25,000 each. Sarma inaugurated the first phase of the scheme for borrowers who were repaying their loans regularly. The government said this is an incentive for them to maintain good credit discipline. A total of 11 lakh women will be benefited during this phase of the scheme.
Sarma said, “The 11 lakh women who were repaying loans regularly till March 31, will first get the benefit of this new scheme. They will be given up to Rs 25,000 or the outstanding amount, whichever is less.” At the same time, he said that women who could not repay the loan at all, would have to apply for forgiveness through the portal. Sarma said that the number of such women would be 12 lakh. “After verification of the applications of such women, the government will hand over the amount deposited in the bank. We will hand over the no-objection certificate issued by the banks to the beneficiary women,” he said.
The promise of one lakh jobs will be fulfilled in a year: CM
Beneficiaries of eight districts – Sonitpur, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao will be provided their due incentives through account payee checks in November.
In the second phase, relief will be provided to borrowers whose payments are overdue by 1 to 89 days and for those accounts which are overdue but not NPA. The state government will pay the dues. In the third phase, borrowers who are stressed, destitute and whose accounts have become NPA will be covered. “The government will consider providing partial or complete relief based on the assessment,” read a CMO release.
Sarma said, “The state government has been able to fulfill its election promise of microfinance debt relief within six months and will continue to move forward with the same enthusiasm in future also.” He announced that his government’s promise of providing one lakh jobs in a year would also be fulfilled before May 10 next year.
