Guwahati: BJP has registered a massive victory in Majuli assembly seat. by-election In Assam on Thursday. of BJP Bhuban Gam won by a margin of over 42,000 votes, which was close to the margin by which Sarbananda Sonowal Won in the 2021 assembly elections in Majuli (43,192). Voting was held again this time on this river island as Sonowal had left the seat after joining the Narendra Modi cabinet last year.
Gum’s closest rival, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Chittaranjan Basumatary, who was supported by Congress and other opposition parties, managed to garner only 25,000 votes. While the BJP candidate got a total of 67,242 votes, Basumtari got 25,101 votes. Richong, nephew of Socialist Unity Center of India (Communist), had to be satisfied with 2,214 votes till the final report came out. About 1.7% or 1,571 voters chose none of these (NOTA). Sonowal had won the last election in Majuli in 2021 by defeating Rajiv Lochan Pegu of Congress.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to congratulate Gham. He reiterated that the victory in Majuli reflects people’s faith in PM Modi’s development agenda and vision of ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’. Sarma tweeted, “Thank you Majuli for reposing faith in us.”
Jubilant BJP supporters took out a rally in Majuli, smeared gulal at each other and danced to the beats of Bihu and traditional songs of the Missing community called Oinitom. The gum, native to the island, was introduced as a ‘chalani’ or local against the imported candidate Basumatari, who hails from the neighboring Dhemaji district. Before the elections, both BJP and AJP allies had held marathon rallies. While Chief Minister Sarma himself addressed several rallies, Assam PCC president Bhupen Bora, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi were the main campaigners of Basumatary.
State BJP President Bhabesh Kalita said that all the opposition parties together failed miserably in Majuli. “The opposition parties could not match the BJP’s equation,” Kalita said.
“I’m not one to tempt people with false promises. I prefer to do my job to get the point across,” Gamm said.
Basumatary conceded defeat and thanked the people of Majuli for their support. However, he said the fight against the BJP would continue. “People of Majuli reposed faith in us, though we could not win. Our mission to defeat the BJP will not be derailed even after today’s defeat,” he said.
