Ashwin not hooked on the field, should be considered for white-ball format: L Sivaramakrishnan

Former India legspinner L Sivaramakrishnan said R Ashwin should be considered for India’s white-ball squads once again considering his experience and ability to bowl with the left arm. Sivaramakrishnan said that Ashwin should be one of the talking names for the Indian team for the ICC T20 World Cup, especially if he has a good run. Ashwin hasn’t played for India Blues since 2017, when the team went with wrist spin options like Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

“Yeah, he’s one of the best bowlers for us in the last few years. His experience will definitely help,” Sivaramakrishnan said at a press conference organized by Sony Network. “He bowls very well for the left arm. He is not inclined on the ground, can field very well and is a safe catcher. He has worked hard on his fielding and fitness. That should be considered in my opinion. If there are a lot of left-handers in the opposition, you want your best off-spinner to bowl to them. If Ashwin has a good IPL in UAE, he should be considered.”

Sivaramakrishnan also spoke about Kuldeep Yadav’s troubles and said that he has to work on both his technique and mindset.

“He has to work on his action and many other things. When he came into the team, Kulcha’s pair was tremendous. They were two different types of bowlers. When he got success, many people praised him. But a bowler needs support when he is short of confidence.

“You have to recognize your mistakes and improve. A lot of people have said that Kuldeep is slow in the air, it’s probably working on his mental aspect of the game.

“The natural pace of a bowler is different. Slow bowling can be beneficial. Amit Mishra’s pace is below 80 in IPL and batsmen struggle. Every bowler has his own instinctive pace.

Kuldeep needs to work both technically and mentally. He is still very young, a rare kind of bowler. He can come back and be very useful for India. If your IPL team drops you, it will be of no use. From there you build your confidence. If he works hard and has a good IPL, he can have a good chance of coming back.”

Former India legspinner was impressed by Rahul Chahar.

“He is a really good bowler. I like his attitude, he wants to take wickets and be aggressive. In the slip position, Rohit Sharma captained him beautifully. He was very good before IPL was suspended I have seen him bowl a lot in domestic cricket. He is a very hard working guy. I love Rahul Chahar’s look. He will be successful.”
