Ashes 2021: Stokes’ no-ball kills Warner, umpire misses to check all-rounder’s overstepping

The second day of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane witnessed a strange incident that exposed a major mistake committed by the third umpire. Ben Stokes, who returned to the field after a long break, overstepped four times in his opening over. However, the TV umpire did not notice it until the all-rounder managed to beat Australia’s opener David Warner for 17 runs.

After the incident, it was found that Stokes overstepped in the last three balls as well but was not picked by the third umpire. Australia’s Channel Seven shared a video on Twitter and wrote, “First four balls to David Warner from Ben Stokes were no balls.”

According to ICC rules, the third umpire has to keep an eye on the overstepping of bowlers on every ball, not just the balls of the wicket.
