As J&K Votes for Local Body Bypoll, Farooq Abdullah Recalls How Army ‘Captured Polling Booth’ When he Was CM

Farooq Abdullah was on Monday re-elected as the President of the National Conference (NC) for another term. The leader made a controversial statement on Monday, saying that when he was the chief minister, the army had captured a polling station and did not allow people to exercise their right in Doda.

The voting machine was kept inside the army camp. Now I want to warn the army not to do this again. Do not interfere in elections. I want to tell the government not to interfere in the elections, otherwise it will have an effect. We are ready to give our lives,” Abdullah said.

According to officials, currently, re-polling is underway in two District Development Council or DDC seats in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara and Bandipora districts after counting of votes on these seats was stopped after questions were raised over the origin of the candidates.

Farooq Abdullah named NC chief

The 85-year-old leader was unanimously elected party chief at the delegate session of the NC held near the mausoleum of party founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah at Naseem Bagh here.

Sheikh Abdullah’s 117th birth anniversary was also celebrated on this day.

NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said only Abdullah’s nomination had been received by the last date for filing nominations.

Sagar said that a total of 183 resolutions were received from Kashmir, 396 from Jammu and 25 from Ladakh in support of Farooq Abdullah.

The senior leader had recently expressed his desire to step down due to his health. The party then set in motion the presidential election process and stated that the new president would be elected at the party’s delegate session.

It said that the internal elections of the party have already been concluded.

The last presidential election of NC was held five years ago.
