Responding to speculation that his name was being considered for the post of Maharashtra Governor, he said, “It is pure speculation. No one has contacted me. I know nothing about it. Nobody said anything. I have already informed the Prime Minister that wherever he wants, in whatever position he wants, I am with him.”

The statement comes after several media reports claimed that Amarinder Singh is likely to be appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra as the current Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has expressed his desire to step down.

Koshyari, who faced major controversy and calls to resign by the opposition in Maharashtra, had recently said that he had expressed his willingness to discharge his duties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Raj Bhavan said in a tweet, “During the recent visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister to Mumbai, I conveyed to him my desire to be relieved of all political responsibilities and spend the rest of my life in reading, writing. and other activities. I have always received love and affection from the Honorable Prime Minister and I hope to receive the same in this regard.”

Koshyari was appointed as the Governor of Maharashtra in September 2019. His remarks calling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj an “old icon” while addressing a function at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad sparked controversy.

Notably, Amarinder Singh quit the Congress in 2021 after he was removed as Punjab chief minister following a bitter power battle with party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. Amarinder Singh later formed his own party, the ‘Punjab Lok Congress’, which failed to win any seats in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. He himself lost from his home turf of Patiala Urban as AAP won a landslide victory.

Months later, Amarinder Singh joined the BJP and merged his Punjab Lok Congress with it, saying the time had come for him to join a party with “like-minded people” in their commitment to India’s interests and security. .
