outgoing Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh congratulated on Sunday Charanjit Singh Channi, who would be the next chief minister, said he hoped Channi would secure the “border state of Punjab”.

Pointing to a challenge for Channi, Captain Amarinder Singh said Punjab was facing an increasing security threat. She transmitted her message through her media advisor Raveen Thukral, who tweeted on her behalf: ‘My best wishes to Charanjit Singh Channi. I hope he is able to keep the border state of Punjab safe and protect our people from the growing security threat from across the border’: @capt_amarinder (sic)

Amarinder also expressed regret that he would not be able to hand over job letters to the next of kin of farmers killed in protest against the Centre’s new agricultural laws. He urged Channi, who was elected chief minister, to “help the needy at the earliest”. Thukral tweeted, “Saddened to not personally hand over job letters to the families of 150 farmers who lost their lives in the agitation against the Agriculture Act. It is expected that the nominated CM Charanjit S Channi will do the necessary work at the earliest. I stand with farmers in fight for justice’: @capt_amarinder (sic)

After months of political tussle with Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Captain resigned from the post of CM on Saturday. Amarinder said he stepped down because he felt “humiliated”, and also called Sidhu a “disaster”.

Channi was among four cabinet ministers and several Congress MLAs who revolted against Amarinder last month. He had said that he did not have “trust” in the CM as he had “failed to fulfill the promises” made before the 2017 assembly elections. Channi had then said that “unfulfilled promises” included delays in justice in 2015 sacrilege cases, arrests of drug rackets and cancellation of power purchase agreements. These are the three central issues around which Sidhu fought the inter-party battle. with amarinder
