Sources said that in a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday, AICC General Secretary and Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat informed the Chief Minister about the appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu as the next state unit chief of the party. Meanwhile, Sidhu on Saturday met Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunil Jakhar and several MLAs, amid speculation that the party would appoint the cricketer-turned-politician as the next chief of its state unit. After meeting Jakhar that lasted for more than half an hour, Sidhu said that he was his elder brother and guide. Jakhar in turn called Sidhu a capable man. After meeting Jakhar, Sidhu met other party leaders including some ministers in Chandigarh.
He contacted Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu and senior party leader Lal Singh, who is considered close to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. Sidhu also met cabinet minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and MLAs Barindermeet Singh Pahra, Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, Kulbir Singh Zeera and Davinder Singh Ghubaya. Talking to reporters, Randhawa said that “all is well” in the party.
The meetings are taking place in the backdrop of rising tension in the Punjab Congress following differences between Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Sidhu. On Friday, Sidhu met party chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi to try to reach a truce formula on reforms in the state unit.
AICC Punjab in-charge general secretary Harish Rawat and Rahul Gandhi were also present in the meeting. The news of Sidhu’s promotion had upset Amarinder Singh and he had written to Sonia Gandhi expressing strong displeasure over the developments.
