One of the popular festivals of India, the first day of Pongal is known as Bhogi. Pongal 2023 is a four-day harvest festival that will begin on January 14 and end on January 18. Bhogi Festival, Thai Pongal, Mattu Pongal and Kannam Pongal are among the four-day celebrations. According to the Tamil calendar, Bhogi occurs on 14 January.

This harvest festival, also known as Pedda Panduga in some states, is mainly celebrated in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. People pray to Lord Indra, the god of rain and clouds, during the festival of Bhogi to seek his blessings for bountiful harvest and prosperity.

The front of the houses are decorated with colorful rangolis and pumpkin flowers called kolams. Fresh cow dung or gobemma is also used to decorate the rangoli patterns. Earthen lamps can also be placed on top of the decorations. Bhogi Mantalu is another important ritual performed on the first day of Pongal. To put it out, bonfires made of wood and other solid fuels are lit.

Importance

On the eve before Pongal, participants gather to make a fire out of wood and discarded or unusable items, then light it. Women sing songs in new clothes and make offerings to the Sun God and Mother Earth with sandalwood paste and kumkum in bonfires, and they also burn agricultural residues. Burning garbage is a symbolic way of saying goodbye to the old and welcoming the new.
