Ali Fazal: Maybe, Satyajit Ray would have liked us at least for ‘Re’

Ali Fazal was recently seen in the Forget Me Not segment of the anthology series Re. The episode is based on Satyajit Ray’s short story Bipin Choudhary Smritibhrom (Memory loss of Bipin Choudhary). Ali plays an ambitious man named Ipsit, who professes a razor-sharp memory and breaks down mentally after being challenged to a few dates.

“I consider myself very fortunate that Satyajit Ray’s short story eventually evolved into something like Ipsit in the anthology ‘Forget Me Not.’ The recap is because it was technical and very good and it feels good,” Ali told IANS.

He continued: “It was lovely to be associated with that name and personality, if it was even for a fleeting few seconds. I’m just grateful. We’re all grateful as long as we have work (as long as we have work) , we are grateful).”

Was it difficult to reach out to audiences who are not fully aware of Satyajit Ray’s work? “Yes, it was or maybe it is in some sections. In Bengal, they still celebrate them in a big way, but I think a large part of the new young generation is still not aware of their work and so we have to He claimed, adding: “We tried our level best to keep it up. Ray’s essence lives on in the work and in my acting. There have been some great performances in his cinematic work,” he said.

Ali did not find it a challenge to immerse himself in the story written by Ray. He says he regarded the project as a “very new project”.

“I’ve seen a lot of people trying to make comparisons, but possibly can’t because their cinema was so different from their writing. This is a written piece. In fact, there were no female characters in the original. So, We included female characters in our short. We tried… Of course, it takes a darker path,” he said.

Ali continued: “He was a great man and he set an example. He was a very progressive person. Maybe, he would have liked us to at least try ‘Ray’. If we were remaking his film then the comparison would have been understandable. This is our shortened version and tribute. We have tried to push the boundaries.”

Re was released on Netflix on 25 June.
