The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Saturday announced a COVID-19 relief grant to support Category 1 and 2 active referees, and assistant referees, who have been adversely affected financially by the COVID-19 pandemic. .

The grant is a one-time financial assistance to match officials that are managed by AIFF through their participation as officials in AIFF competitions.

Match officials eligible for the COVID-19 Relief Grant are those who do not have a permanent job or income, other than match fees and allowances earned through umpiring in football competitions, as of June 2021.

“Under the aid, 164 eligible match officials (Category 1 and 2) will receive one-time financial assistance. The total outlay for this assistance is around Rs 25 lakh,” AIFF said in a statement.

AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the world especially the sports industry and has resulted in a reduction in sporting activities, barring a few major professional events, due to the necessary COVID safety protocols.

“In our effort to move forward together, AIFF understands that this has resulted in loss of jobs and income for many people who depend on these activities to earn their income. With the pandemic now extending for over a year, but uncertainty still looms large as to when activities can fully resume, many are struggling financially,” Das said.

“AIFF wants to extend its support to as many people as possible associated with the sport.”
