AHMEDABAD: Nearly three months after a woman killed herself, her husband hanged himself on Friday, following harassment by money lenders.
The Ranip police identified the deceased as Nikunj Panchal, a 36-year-old who supplied mineral water for a living. They also registered a case of abetment of suicide against Rakesh Naik, Devang Sathwara and Anup Patel on Saturday.
In her complaint, Nikunj’s mother Lila (63) stated, “Nikunj, who had suffered huge losses in the business during the Covid lockdown, had taken Rs 10 lakh at four per cent interest from Naik. Nikunj had to recover Rs 15 lakh from his friend Anup, who kept making empty promises.”
She told police that Nikunj gave blank cheques and promissory notes along with documents of the house that belonged to her to Naik. “Naik and others used to harass Nikunj for the money. Naik would deposit the cheques, and then threaten to lodge a police complaint against Nikunj. My son would tell me that he could repay Naik if Anup returned Rs 15 lakh. Meanwhile, Naik continued to harass not just him but also his wife Shweta. Fed up, she killed herself on June 2.”
Even after her death, Naik and his partner, Sathwara, used to harass and threaten Nikunj, she alleged, adding: “Naik and Sathwara used to stand outside our society in Ranip and threaten to harass my 11-year-old grandson. On Friday afternoon, Nikunj hanged himself.”
