The BJP alleges that when Paul’s car was coming out of the counting centre, water pouches and green bricks were hurled with bricks, after which the police took him to a safe place.

Bengal bypolls turned violent once again on Saturday after stone-pelting was reported at BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul’s car as counting of votes showed the Trinamool Congress on its way to a clean sweep as it demolished rivals in the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, where the film actor from Politician-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha is leading by an unassailable margin of nearly 2.3 lakh votes, while its candidate Babul Supriyo is on his way to win the coveted Ballygunge constituency.

The BJP alleged that when she was coming out of the counting centre, she was thrown at Paul’s car along with water pouches and green bricks, after which the police took her to a safe place. However, the Trinamool Congress has denied these allegations.

As Paul admitted defeat, she said: “I will repeat what King Porus said to Alexander … that he wants a king to be treated as a king … I would have expected Am that Shatrughan Sinha will also consider me as a leader… I accept the mandate of the people and will use this experience to revive myself and start working… I congratulate Shatrughan Sinha on his victory I give.”

The bypolls, held on April 12, were necessitated as Supriyo resigned as the MP from Asansol after switching from the BJP to the TMC, while Subrata Mukherjee, Minister of State representing Ballygunge, died last year. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee thanked the voters of Asansol Lok Sabha seat and Ballygunge assembly constituency for giving decisive mandate to TMC candidates in both the seats where bypolls were held.

“I wholeheartedly thank the voters of Asansol Parliamentary Constituency and Ballygunge Assembly Constituency for giving decisive mandate to AITC Party candidates,” she tweeted. Hats off to voters for believing in us, once again.”
