Marvel boss explains that the use of few characters and plotlines in a show or movie doesn’t grant them a place in the MCU’s timeline.
The question of whether Marvel TV shows, including Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, should be considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has long been a topic of debate among fans. After years of speculation, Marvel CEO, Kevin Feige, has finally addressed this issue and provided clarity regarding which TV shows are considered part of the MCU and which are not. In the recently released book, Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline, Feige explains that the use of few characters and plotlines in a show or movie doesn’t grant them a place in the MCU’s timeline. His statement hints that the shows created before WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen, may not be officially considered part of the MCU.
He explained, “On the Multiverse note, we recognize that there are stories, movies and series that are canonical to Marvel but were created by different storytellers during different periods of Marvel’s history. The timeline presented in this book is specific to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline through Phase 4. But, as we move forward and dive deeper into the Multiverse Saga, you never know when timelines may just crash or converge.”
The book, Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline, as per The Direct is said to include only the shows, covering all the MCU films and two specials, Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Additionally, films produced by 20th Century Fox and Sony prior to its acquisition by Disney are also excluded from the Timeline.
Despite the clarification provided by Kevin Feige, fans can still expect some exciting crossovers within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in the current phase known as The Multiverse Saga. Interestingly, this intersection of worlds has already begun, as stars from Netflix’ Daredevil series, such as Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, have made appearances in MCU projects like She Hulk and Spider-Man: Far From Home, setting the stage for their upcoming series, Daredevil: Born Again.
Meanwhile, Kevin’s decision to exclude certain Marvel projects from the MCU’s Timeline appears logical. By keeping the focus on more recent projects, it allows the creators to maintain continuity and balance the primary narrative more effectively. This approach helps streamline the complex multiverse stories, ensuring that upcoming projects can proceed without referring to the past Netflix or CBS shows. As of now, how the Multiverse Saga will be dissolved remains a mystery until the release of Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
