Retrenchment Continues: After tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Meta, now aerospace company Boeing has announced that it will cut staff in 2023.

The company expects about 2,000 cuts, primarily in finance and human resources, through a combination of attrition and layoffs, Boeing said in a statement on Monday.

“While no job losses have been notified, we will continue to share information transparently to allow people to plan. The company, which recently moved its headquarters to Arlington, Virginia, Having said that it expects to “significantly increase” the overall workforce during this year,” the company said.

“We grew Boeing’s workforce by 15,000 last year and plan to hire another 10,000 this year with a focus on engineering and manufacturing,” the statement said.

The company said Boeing’s total workforce as of December 31, 2022, was 156,000 employees.

The Seattle Times reports Boeing, which has been one of the largest private employers in Washington state, plans to outsource about a third of the axed positions to Tata Consulting Services in Bengaluru, India.

Mike Friedman, a senior director of communications, told the Times that other positions will be eliminated as the company cuts finance and human resources support services.

“Over time, some of our corporate functions have grown significantly. And with that growth comes bureaucracies or unequal systems that are inefficient,” Friedman said.

“So we’re streamlining.” The Times reported that 1,500 of the company’s roughly 5,800 finance positions would be cut, as well as more than 400 job cuts in human resources, which is about 15 percent of the department’s total workforce.
