After Punjab sweep, AAP eyes Telangana for expansion; Promoting ‘Kejriwal Model of Governance’

After its resounding success in the recent Punjab Assembly elections, a senior party leader said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is trying to expand its base in Telangana by promoting the “Kejriwal Model of Governance”. AAP’s Delhi MLA Somnath Bharti, who visited the state for two days this week, visited Warangal and Hyderabad, the party’s election in-charge for the southern state.

Bharti told PTI over phone from Delhi that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party would undertake a ‘door-to-door’ padyatra in Telangana from April 14, the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar.

He said that AAP aims to bring ‘Kejriwal Model of Governance’ in Telangana. “After the massive ‘Inquilab’ (revolution) of Punjab, I am getting calls from many, many people from all parties. We are alert that we do not want to take on any corrupt person or anyone with bad background. You Will never indulge in religion or caste based politics, but will spread the message of “Kejriwal Model of Governance”.

When pointed out that the political space between the ruling TRS in Telangana and the opposition BJP and Congress is competitive and his party does not even have a proper organization in the state, Bharti said AAP’s competition is not with anyone but an idea. .

He claimed that the idea under which every political party is grouped together in Telangana or any other part of the country is politics based on religion or caste or corruption, while AAP means “work-based politics”. He said that people want employment and want solutions to their problems.

He said that Kejriwal has projected his party’s ideology as “honesty, patriotism and humanity” and with this the party has given amazing governance in the national capital.

On Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s recent attempts to unite opposition parties against the BJP, he said that mere opposition to the saffron party will not work and an alternative agenda is needed for the people.

He also criticized the ruling TRS for allegedly not filling up job vacancies in the government.

Bharti claimed that his two-day visit to Telangana received an “amazing” response. He further insisted that many leaders are willing to join AAP in Telangana. “We’ll open the cards a little later,” he said. He said that during his stay in Hyderabad, he held meetings with leaders of various parties and organisations.

The AAP dissolved all existing committees of its Telangana unit on February 1 and set up a search committee to bring in “new generation leaders” into the party to expand its base in the southern state.

The party’s move to restructure its unit in the state to broaden its base with a new plan was seen in political circles as a part of preparations for the next assembly elections in Telangana to be held in December, 2023.
