Tourists flock to 'The Elephant Whispers' after Oscar win

The recent triumph of the Indian documentary film ‘Elephant Whispers’ has brought tourists to Mudumalai Theppakadu Elephant Camp to catch a glimpse of the baby elephant featured in the film.

The film on Monday won the Oscar in the ‘Best Documentary Short Film’ category. Other films such as ‘Haul Out’, ‘How Do You Measure a Year?’, ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’ and ‘Stranger at the Gate’ were in the running for the same category.

The plot of the film revolves around a family who adopts two orphaned baby elephants in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu. A tourist said, “It’s a great moment. Happy to be here. Elephant is my favorite animal and the fact that the film has won an Oscar makes me happy and excited.”

Tamil documentary director, Karthiki Gonsalves and producer Guneet Monga walked up to collect the golden statuette at the 95th Academy Awards on Monday (IST). In his victory speech, Gonsalves said, “I stand here today to speak on the sacred bond between us and our natural world. For the sake of respect for indigenous communities. For the sake of other living beings, we share our space.” We do.”

“And finally for coexistence. Thank you to the Academy for recognizing our film that highlights indigenous people and animals. To Netflix for believing in the power of this film. To my producer Guneet and my entire team and finally , my parents and sister who are up above, you are the center of my universe. For my motherland India,” she added.

This is not the first time Guneet Monga has won an Oscar. In 2019, Monga’s documentary ‘Period. End of Sentence’ won the Oscar in the ‘Documentary Short Subject’ category.
