Stuart Broad, the former England fast bowler, received the CBE in King Charles’ New Year’s honors, while the former opener and senior men’s team batting coach Marcus Trescothik was honored with the OBE as the official honours list was released on Saturday, December 30.
The CBE signifies ‘Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire,’ the highest distinction among the Order of the British Empire awards. Broad retired from Test cricket following the Ashes 2023 series, where he played a pivotal role in England’s comeback after being 2-0 down. With 167 Tests for England, Broad secured 604 wickets, the second-highest in men’s cricket for England, trailing only James Anderson.
Both Broad and Trescothick are having their existing honors elevated. Trescothick was previously bestowed with an MBE in 2005 when the England Men’s team notably reclaimed the Ashes, while Broad was initially granted an MBE in 2017. Trescothick, aged 48, retired from professional cricket in 2019 and has been recognized for his contributions as an ambassador for mental health.

“All I ever wanted to do was play cricket, and to have had the career that I was able to enjoy and to receive honours like this is incredibly special,” Broad said, as quoted by England and Wales Cricket Board.
“I’m very proud that my contributions to cricket have been recognised, and it means a lot to me and my family,” Broad added.

Broad’s illustrious career saw him pick up 800 wickets in International cricket, a feat not many players have been able to achieve during the course of their careers.
“They have been fantastic ambassadors for cricket for many years, and they have played a major role in helping build the profile of our game and in turn bringing more people into our sport. Stuart has long been an inspirational figure and will be remembered as a true great of English cricket, and the spectacular nature of his retirement this summer was the perfect farewell,” ECB chair, Richard Thompson said, congratulating the fast bowler for his honour.
