The results of the five assembly elections came as a setback for the Congress, which is hoping to revive its prospects for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and do well to replace the emerging challenger from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress. Now with the massive victory of the Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab and the defeat of top Congress leaders including Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and State Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu, the task of revival in Punjab will also be a big challenge.
With its success in Punjab, AAP leaders are talking about the party being a “national force” and emerging as a “national and natural replacement” of the Congress. He also says that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be a “major rival of the BJP” in future.
AAP leader Raghav Chadha has spoken about Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal “will be in a bigger role of Prime Minister in 2024 if people give a chance”.
Trinamool Congress leaders want to see West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the role and have spoken of the need for broader opposition unity against the BJP. He has met leaders of Shiv Sena and NCP and also held talks with Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Competition appears to be churning as well as the opposition ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and both the AAP and the Trinamool Congress are keen to be seen as the BJP’s main challenger, a role the Congress has so far accepted.
The BSP’s defeat in the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh also points to the party’s dwindling strength in the state between the BJP and Samajwadi Party-led alliances and the state’s politics becoming increasingly bipolar.
Congress will soon hold its working committee meeting to analyze the election results. Upset over the results, Congress G-23 leaders, who wrote to Sonia Gandhi demanding comprehensive reforms, including elections at various levels, are due to meet in the next 48 hours.
Party leader Shashi Tharoor, a member of the G-23, on Thursday called for reforms in the party’s “organizational leadership in a manner that would revive those ideas and inspire people”. “One thing is clear – change is inevitable if we need to be successful,” he said in a tweet.
Congress is to elect a president at the culmination of organizational elections this year and the election results will cast a shadow on the process. It remains to be seen whether Rahul Gandhi is suggested by a section of the party to take up the role again.
Rahul Gandhi, who lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi and won from Wayanad, said on Thursday that the Congress will learn from the election results “and will continue to work for the interests of the people of India”. The Congress in the last several months has seen some of its young promising leaders and even some of the older leaders quit the party.
Conversely, as the BJP increased its vote share in Uttar Pradesh in this election, the vote share of the Congress declined, although it was contesting almost all 403 seats after a long gap. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra gave 40 per cent tickets to women candidates and held about 200 rallies and road shows in UP.
The party also released the youth manifesto. The party won just two seats and 2.33 per cent of the vote, compared to the seven it won in 2017, when it contested 114 seats as part of an alliance with the Samajwadi Party. In the last assembly elections, the Congress got 6.25 percent votes. The Congress had won 28 seats in the 2012 assembly elections with 11.65 per cent votes and 22 seats in 2007 with 8.61 per cent votes.
On Thursday, the Congress indicated that the confrontational ambitions of its leaders had hurt the party’s prospects. Party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said there is a need to “seriously introspect, re-examine, re-consider” whether the race for political positions is “undermining the party’s position to such an extent that we are looking at the cause of our protest”. helping and where we end up harming the Congress party.”
