A total of 20 courses including B.Sc (Hons) Physics, B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry will be allowed admission through CUET in Jamia this year, which is 10 more than last academic year.

Jamia Millia Islamia has decided not to implement the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses except in 20 programmes, citing lack of time to change university rules.

A total of 20 courses including B.Sc (Hons) Physics, B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry will be allowed admission through CUET this year, which is 10 more than last academic year.

The university has written to the University Grants Commission (UGC) informing about the latest decision and also informed that it will implement CUET-UG in all courses from the academic year 2024-25 as it has enough time to change the admission rules. Time is needed.

UGC had introduced CUET last year for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), however, did not adopt CUET for all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Recently, UGC had asked Jamia to implement CUET UG in all courses from the academic session 2023-24.

The university in its reply to the UGC informed that it will take admission through CUET UG and PG only in 20 courses- 15 undergraduate courses and 5 postgraduate courses.

JMI offers admission to a number of programs on the basis of merit determined by an entrance test conducted by the University, and wherever applicable, followed by an interview and/or other components. “We have received the letter from the UGC. And we have replied to them that this year CUET will be adopted not completely but for 20 courses. As there is not much time left for the changes in the university rules. But for the next academic year, we will implement CUET UG. All admissions to undergraduate courses in the university will be done through CUET. We have informed the UGC about this.

“Our Executive Council (the highest decision-making body of the university) decided that it would not be possible to implement CUET this year as admission to many courses is through interview. For courses which do not require interview, we will allow admission through CUET,” said the registrar.

Since CUET PG is not mandatory, the university has no plans to implement it completely from the next academic year as well.

Last month, the UGC had written to Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia reiterating that all central universities must mandatorily adopt the Common University Entrance Test for admission to undergraduate programmes. JMI also released a prospectus for admission for the academic year 2023-24.

UG courses in which admission will be taken through CUET are BA (Hons) (Turkish Language and Literature) (Hons) Sanskrit, BA (Hons) French and Francophone Studies, BA (Hons) Spanish and Latin American Studies, BA (Hons) . Hons) History, BA (Hons) Hindi, BA (Hons.) Urdu, BA (Hons.) Korean Language, BA (Hons.) Persian, B.Sc. Biotechnology, B. Voc. (Solar Energy), BSc (Hons) Physics, BSc (Hons) Chemistry, BSc (Hons) Applied Mathematics and BA (Hons) Economics.

Similarly, PG courses allowing admission through CUET are MA (Persian), MA (Sanskrit), MA (Educational Planning and Administration), M.Sc. (Disaster Management and Climate Sustainability (Self Finance) and PG Diploma in Disaster Management (Self Finance).
