When he took over as the Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha was aware of the challenge ahead – changing the perception of law and order for elections, which were just a year away. Now that he has overcome the challenge of ensuring the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the elections, will Saha continue as chief minister?
Sources tell News18 that Saha may continue, even as there was talk that Union minister Pratima Bhowmik, who contested from the tough Dhanpur seat and won by over 3,500 votes, is in the running.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma visited Tripura on Saturday and met all senior leaders. Bhowmik was also seen with her at the airport. Sources say that Sarma has almost indicated that Saha may continue. A senior BJP leader said, “Though he hasn’t said anything officially, it is almost understood.”
What works for Saha?
Saha has a ‘bhadralok’ (gentleman) image and has maintained law and order in the last one year. A section of party insiders say there was no violence in the last year under his leadership as chief minister.
Amidst the tribal factor and the Congress-Left alliance, Saha not only contested from his seat but gave able leadership to all the seats and preached that Tripura would be peaceful.
He maintained a balance with everyone and treated small party workers and outsiders as well. Many say that he is an approachable chief minister.
What works for Bhowmik?
Bhowmick has a history of struggle and has played a key role in building the party. She is known for her simple cotton sarees and hawai chappals. “She is a Dalit face, and a woman leader. All these factors are positive,” say party insiders.
“But Saha is facing a challenge playing matches, which is why his chances are high,” many believe.
