Actor Adil Hussain has many reasons to celebrate. His film “Footprints on Water” premiered at the UK Asian Film Festival, where Hussain won the Best Actor award. Directed by British debutant filmmaker Natalia Siam, the film also won the Best Debut Film at the New York Indian Film Festival. Festival (NYIFF).

During an interaction with Hindustan Times, Hussain shared that the film is his first attempt to explore a subject which is not usually discussed in this part of the world. The film focuses on the struggle of illegal immigrants in the United Kingdom. However, he is disappointed that despite international acclaim, such films are often not seen by Indian audiences.

“If you ask me, the audience is not to be blamed for this, as they have not really been educated by Indian filmmakers for the last 30-40 years. The kind of movies that Indian mass audiences are given to watch by all industries are more black and white, typical ‘good boy, bad boy’. [stories], This is probably one of the reasons why the Indian audience is not used to watching complex films and their awareness of watching good films has not really developed.

Adil said he wanted to put the onus on filmmakers and tell them that it is easier for them to sell black and white films than gray shades. He believes that an important reason why such films often go unnoticed is the lack of financial support for their production and promotion. In India, producers are hesitant to invest in these films and create awareness among the public. Theatrical releases require substantial funding, making it challenging for films like “Footprints on Water” to reach an audience unless they find a platform for streaming. [in India] Not willing to trust the content, and invest money to bring these films into the public’s consciousness and awareness. And even promoting it, there is little chance that such films will be available for public viewing, as theatrical releases require a lot of money. So, it may land on an OTT platform, but unless it is duly promoted, people will not know that such a film even exists.

Adil said that even when such films come on OTT, people ask, ‘Who is the star?’. “Barring a few series, OTT platforms are almost identical to mainstream Indian cinema [where they cast fresh talent],” They said.

Adil Hussain was recently seen in the web series Tooth Fairy: When Love Bites.
