Lavanya, a student of Sacred Hearts High School in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, died due to the unbearable torture of the school staff by two nuns who had pressured Lavanya to convert to Christianity. ABVP, the student wing of BJP, submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Tamil Nadu through district collectors demanding a fair trial in this matter.
The deceased student, in one of her video statements, had mentioned how Sister Raquel Mary pressured her parents to convert to Christianity, but despite the video and her mother’s testimony, no action was taken by the state government. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad said that it strongly condemns the incident and urged the government to conduct a fair and transparent inquiry into the matter.
The memorandum includes demands like appointment of an officer with good track record for impartial investigation. ABVP held symbolic demonstrations at 11 places in Delhi, after which a memorandum was submitted to the district collectors.
Siddharth Yadav, National Media Convenor of ABVP and Delhi State Secretary, said, “The suicide of a girl student under pressure of conversion at Sacred Hearts High School in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu is heart-wrenching. We are in this fight for justice. We stand with the family of the deceased. We have also submitted a memorandum to the Governor and urged him for a fair trial and transparent investigation in the matter. We demand to bring in new laws at the earliest to stop conversions across the country.”
